چکیده
The neutron Time of Flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN is a high flux neutron source obtained by the spallation of 20 GeV/c protons onto a solid lead target. The proton beam beam is delivered by the Proton Synchrotron (PS) at CERN capable of providing up to four sharp bunches (6 ns) with an intensity of 7 10^ 12 protons per bunch within a 14.4s supercycle. The outstanding characteristics of this facility: high neutron flux of 10^ 6 n/cm^2/7 10^12 p. at 182.5 m, wide spectral function from 1 eV up to 250 MeV, low repetition rates and an excellent energy resolution of 2 x 10^-4 open new possibilites for high precision neutron induced cross section measurements, using samples of modest mass. The facility was commisioned in Nov. 2000 and Apr. 2001, with performances similar to those predicted by Monte Carlo simulations.

A new high-flux spallation neutron source, the neutron Time-Of-Flight facility (nTOF), recently became operational at CERN. The neutron energy ranges from the thermal to the GeV range. Performance results from the commissioning are reported.

The CNGS project was approved by CERN Council in December 1999. This report gives a short description of the νμ beam to be built at CERN in the direction of the INFN Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS). The first goal of this new facility is the production of sufficient νμ in an energy region optimised for the detection of an adequate number of ντ produced by oscillation at LNGS. The layou...

A new measurement has been made of the rate of pair{production in a 3.2 mm thick tungsten crystal, exposed to photons with energies in the range 10 to 150 GeV, for angles of incidence up to 10 mrad from the crystal axis. A strong enhancement of the pair{production rate is observed when the beam is aligned along the <100> crystal axis, as compared to a random orientation. This e ect can be explo...

Computer simulations for the CERN muon storage ring confirm the absence of beam-induced multipacting. Thus electron-cloud build up along the bunch train is not expected to be a problem. Geneva, Switzerland January 5, 2001 We first describe a few basic considerations on electron-cloud build up, scaling from the LHC, and then report simulation results. Table 1 lists relevant parameters for the CE...

In the CERN SPS microwave instability is an important limitation for the single bunch intensity of a proton beam. In the past this instability has been studied at energies above transition energy. In this paper we describe recent observations concerning the instability in the SPS at two different energies below transition. The results are compared with those obtained by the same measurement met...
